My skin has had a rough couple of months in terms of breakouts. I went through a period of time where my face would not stop breaking out. And I mean big breakouts that were angry at my skin. It was one of the most irritating feelings to have no control over my skin. After a couple months of uncontrollable blemishes, I began to feel a little less like myself. I was self conscious of my breakouts and constantly wore make-up to cover them up. After research and finding a new routine I was finally able to diminish my breakouts and keep my skin calm.
There are a ton of products out there that claim to work wonders. They claim to be the single product you can use to make your skin perfect… but this isn’t true. I don’t believe there is one product out there that is going to solve all your skin problems. It takes a combination of items working together to clear skin and keep it nourished. It is important to find out what works best for your skin type and its needs. In some cases it probably takes a good dermatologist and esthetician as well which I would recommend if you have the means to do so.
Step 1: Cleanse
I got to a point where I just wanted something to work. I read so many great reviews about the Clarisonic Fit and felt like it couldn’t let me down. (And it is 30 percent off at the moment as part of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.)
Right away I noticed that my face felt so clean compared to washing it with just my hands or even a rag. Not only does the Clarisonic help exfoliate the skin but there are two modes you can choose from. The first mode is a little more gentle which is the one I use in the mornings or whenever I don’t have any make up on. The second mode is ultra-cleasning mode which is best for when I have a full face of makeup because it gets that stuff off! Whenever I go to dry my face I never have any makeup left behind on the towel which is amazing!
The Clarisonic Fit is timed and will send out a little vibration when it is time to start on the next part of your face; working its way from your forehead down to your chin or in the second modes case down the neck. I love that its timed and helps guide you because it ensures that your face is getting the proper cleanse it deserves; there will be no accidental skimping. I use my Aveeno cleanser instead of the Clarisonic brand just based on my own preference.
I never go a morning or night now where I don’t wash my face because I can certainly tell the difference when I don’t.
Like I said however, there is not just one magic product out there which leads me to the next step in my nightly routine.
Step 2: Treat
La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo. I use the duo alone because I found the cleanser and toner to be drying to my skin. The duo is an acne treatment that you put a dab directly on to the pimple(s). It may not be gone by morning but it will be a lot smaller than it was the day before. Since this is made with salicylic acid it is a little more gentle and less drying than benzoyl peroxide.
Step 3: Moisturize
After I apply the duo I use my face oils as my nightly moisturizer. I use to be afraid of applying oils to my face because I thought that it would cause my face to breakout and look greasy. This is not the case at all! Your face will be shiny and oily when you apply them obviously which is why I only use them at night! But I swear that every morning when I wake up my face looks so happy and healthy. I can see the difference in my skin even from one night of not using them.
Face oils are natural and nourishing which makes them such an important step in my routine. I currently use a combination of Vitamin E Oil which I bought at Walmart, Kopari Coconut Oil and Kiehls Midnight Recovery Concentrate. I am soon going to add Vitamin C as well. You can find what is best for your skin type here.
Vitamin E fights wrinkles, inflammation, redness and acne scars which I recently have been fighting against. The Kiehls concentrate uses lavender oil which fights acne, nourish, heals dry skin and reduces dark spots and acne scars. Coconut oil kills bacteria fighting against acne and nourishes the skin.
Lastly, I apply my eye cream because my under eyes get quite dry during the day. The Kiehls eye cream has avocado oil which helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles in addition to keeping the area moisturized. I suppose you could use pure avocado oil but I have enjoyed using this product so far.
Figuring out your skin can be difficult and time consuming but it is worth it to find out what’s going on. Breakouts are a sign from your body that something just aint right. Taking care of your skin is part of taking care of yourself! I never realized the true importance of this until recently when my face went haywire! In a way I am glad that it happened because I have learned so much about my skin and have ended up taking better care of it.
Put Your Health First
When it comes to money I always try to put my nutrition and skin care first but it doesn’t have to break the bank! I bought my vitamin E oil at Walmart for $4 where I also bought some coconut oil for $7 that I use as body moisturizer but its just as pure and can be used on the face. Don’t feel like you can’t afford to take care of your skin because there are a ton of great affordable alternatives out there. It all comes down to the ingredients and reading all the labels. You might be surprised to see how similar some products are to one another.
What are a few of your favorite skin products you just couldn’t live without? I would love to hear.
