Sometimes it can be astronomically hard to find inspiration.
Sometimes I feel like I have been triggered and slingshot into this quicksand swamp filled with inspiration-hungry animals trying to steal every last ounce of motivation I might have left in my body…. This is what I call a rut. And no, I am not being dramatic… okay maybe a little.
But don’t give up hope.
These so-called ruts will last only as long as you let them. There are ways to spring yourself into another direction, toward endless inspiration. Sound too good to be true?
“Rule Your Mind, Or it Will Rule You.” // Buddha
For me, these ruts happen more often than I would like them to. They typically sneak in during moments of insecurity, doubt or fear. Or sometimes they happen due to stress, in reaction to something that has happened in my life, whether I am dealing with a loss, a break up or struggle of some sort.
Something I always have to remind myself is plain and simple….shit happens. Every day of our lives is not going to be sunny and blue skies. We are human. We will face these moments no matter what and when we realize how to deal with them we can continue each day with the same goals we had planned in the first place.
So, in these moments of my lackluster slump, the first thing I do is embrace it. Embrace whatever struggle it is, whatever feeling of self doubt or insecurity and I catch myself from dwelling.
Then I evaluate it and ask why is this occurring? Is there something negative happening around me? Is it controllable? If it is controllable then fix it. If it is not, then learn to let it go.
Then, I realize that my mind and or body probably needs a break. Stress is often the culprit as it is brought on by all negative things that happen in our lives. It is okay to give yourself a break. I think many can relate that there are weeks where we are just going non-stop. Driving here and there, doing this and that with no time to sit down and breathe. To take care of ourselves, to get a decent amount of sleep so our mind can rejuvenate and get the right nourishment for our bodies to rejuvenate.
Sleep, eat, exercise, repeat.
My most recent time of dealing with this slump happened to be right before spring break in which I had the opportunity to get out of town and head up to the mountains. For me this is always a sure way to heal my mind and body. Something about that crisp mountain air that seems to melt away all my worries. However, I don’t always get the chance to escape away to the land of enchantment and so I have to figure out ways to rejuvenate in my own city.
These ways include hanging out with my friends and family. Spending quality time with those I love is incredibly important to me- unplugged, no phones in front of us and just real conversation to be had. Sometimes I get tired of staring at a bright screen and time away is the best thing for me. Also, having good conversation with people can be inspiring in itself. Listen to peoples stories, how they got where they are. Listen to everyone else’s creative minds and feed off of their energy. The people we surround ourselves with are everything.
Going new places in the area is always a sure way to revamp my mind. There is something about the Dallas skyline that invigorates my bones and opens my mind to the endless possibilities right in front of me.

Listen to Music: There is nothing like a good song to boost my mood. There have actually been studies proving that upbeat music changes peoples mood and makes them happy. Thats powerful. Listen to your favorite song or try listening to a new album to switch things up.
Remind yourself of who you aspire to be. Remind yourself of that mindset and don’t let it go. My inspiration changes on a consistent basis. Right now I like to get in the mindset of Kanye in his collaboration “Glow” with Drake. If you haven’t heard it, give it a listen. There is a reason why these people are where they are. It is a mindset that you have the power to be who you want to be and you must not give up, no matter what.
You got this. Believe in yourself and the rest will follow.
