I may be late to the whole new years resolutions thing, but lets face it, whats new?
Sometimes I get so stuck in my ways that I forget about one of the most important things in life: adventure. Going new places, meeting new faces and finding yourself along the way.
I have never been one to make new years resolutions that I had full intentions of keeping. They were always more of a “well what would be a good idea.” This year for me is going to be different, I am going to make strong goals and plans to achieve them.
Someone I value very much told me the other day told that travel changes you for the better, and I couldn’t agree more. Traveling was something I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to do growing up. While I may have taken these vacations for granted at my young age, I now look back and appreciate them more than I ever had.
This feeling of wanderlust has hit me hard in the last couple weeks, perhaps because it has been a while since I have visited somewhere new or possibly because I have officially become comfortable with where I am now. Travel is not only a nice break from the hustle of everyday life but it is an opportunity to become grounded. If I am open enough to the opportunity I can learn from the traditions of new places and that is what I love the most.
As the years have gone by I feel as though I have lost touch with some of the most important things to me. It has been easy to get wrapped up in this fast-pace world around me and forget my own core values. I believe there is a way to balance an online presence, having a job, being a student and still find time to enjoy the world around me. This year I am going to seek out this balance and find a way to connect to my inner-child: the one that was a little less obsessed with the internet and more obsessed with living life.
One place I visit every year is my family home in Taos, New Mexico. Every time I go I feel connected to the world around me, partially because theres no wifi half the time and partially because theres just something in the air that makes me feel alive. Whether it’s the scenic views, the mountain air or the thrill of being somewhere different, it is special every time. This is a feeling I want more of in my life. Every time I go, I leave feeling different and always in an extraordinary way.
The feeling of being somewhere new is something I don’t think many of us can easily explain. It is exhilarating, fascinating and exciting all the same time. So, this year I want to invest more of my money, time and effort in the opportunity to change my perspective, my thoughts, ideas and image of the world. I want to spend more time trying new things whether their local or miles away.
We learn and grow not only through experience but through people too. As human beings, we are inspired by other people, interactions and conversations we have. So, I want to spend more time building relationships and challenging myself to push outside my comfort zone.
Life is happening right in front of me, and it is my job to grasp on to the moments that will define mine. So, I want to spend more time unplugging from electronics and enjoying what’s real and happening right in front of my face. (While also balancing with a healthy amount of blogging.)
“Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.” -Robert Breault
I grow the most when I force myself to change my stubborn habits. This year for me should be another year to continue growing and gear back to what is most important to me. I am so excited to see what’s in store.
